Egyptian music star Amr Diab this week signed an exclusive licensing deal with Arab world-facing music streaming service Anghami, which will make the artist’s music and videos from his Nay Label catalogue available only on the digital service.
Diab is the most popular artist on the platform with about 1 billion streams. He is the first Egyptian and Middle Eastern performing artist to get a No 1 hit on the Billboard World Albums Chart.
“I chose Anghami because it’s a local platform that has made it internationally and is proudly showcasing Arab culture to the world,” Diab said. “I share Anghami’s vision in developing strong local talent and making their voice heard globally.”
Anghami recently became the first Arab tech company to be listed publicly on the Nasdaq stock exchange in the US. Anghami says the deal with Diab “will strengthen its position as the ultimate destination for lovers of the megastar’s unique composing style and melodic voice”.
“Anghami provides its users with an extensive ecosystem of music, videos, podcasts, events and more,” Anghami co-founder and CEO Eddy Maroun said. “It also empowers creators to curate and share their voice with the world. We are committed to providing the best and unique experience to our users and to supporting the local creator community to unlock its full potential, allowing Arabic content to reach the world.”
Anghami chief strategy and operations officer Mary Ghobrial said: “We want to provide our users around the world with the best content, and, in addition to offering all international music and podcasts, we are committed to leading on Arabic content and taking it to the global stage.
The 60-year-old Diab’s music fuses Western and Egyptian rhythms in a style coined as ‘Mediterranean music’. His music has gained him fans beyond Egypt and the Middle East, and at the moment he enjoys more than 850 000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
