Ghana-based Nigerian indie singer-songwriter Tommy WÁ has released his new EP titled Roadman and Folks. The project is available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The collection, comprising seven songs, was heralded by the singles ‘YAKOYO’ and ‘Dumb Luck’.
The musician told Music In Africa that the EP, which follows 2016’s Me In Me, is the product of three to four years of work, highlighting his sound texture which is a blend of contemporary folk, Indie, and retro-soul.
“Roadman and Folks is a beacon for people struggling with finding purpose, career ambition, romantic longing and those in pursuit of happiness,” Tommy. WÁ said.
Of the two led singles, the artist said: “‘Dumb Luck’ is a striking juxtaposition of flash phrases and thoughts drawn from happenings in a relationship and the politics of being loved or receiving love. Despite not shying away from the fact that life is filled with shortcomings, ‘YAKOYO’ reminds us to hold on to an abundance mindset, and the importance of creating, sharing and feasting on communal hope.”
Roadman and Folks features production from Lucas Müller, Monlee, Nkemjika and Øbed, whilst boasting collaborations with Ghanaian Alté collective SuperJazzClub, and The Isomers.
A singer-songwriter, poet and visual storyteller, Tommy WÁ’s sound is a cocktail that efficiently travels the expanse of his Nigerian roots and caters to the musical cravings of Accra, the Ghanaian cosmopolis where he is based. He cites Mi- chael Kiwanuka, Bon Iver, Brittany Howard, BeautIful Nubia, and The Lumineers amongst others, as influences.
