Reggae enthusiasts across Africa are mourning the loss of Peter ‘Peetah’ Morgan, the lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning band Morgan Heritage.
His passing on 25 February at the age of 46 was announced by his family, with the cause of death yet to be disclosed.
“It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son, brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage, Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today,” a statement said. “Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing.”
Following the news, music industry figures across Africa shared their condolences on social media.
“It’s sad to learn about the sudden death of Peter Morgan, the lead singer of the Morgan Heritage band,” Ugandan musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine said. “Rest in paradise, Rasta. Jah know.”
Ghanaian reggae singer and medical doctor Knii Lante said: “Hearing of this news breaks my heart so much. We had a discussion at your album launch and I was highly excited about the plans. My deepest condolences to the Morgan Heritage family and the reggae community worldwide.”
“RIP to Morgan Heritage’s lead singer Mr Peetah Morgan,” Zimbabwean act Mwenje Mathole added. “The beautiful music, massage and vocals live forever!”
Born on 11 July 1977 in Brooklyn, New York, Peter Morgan was one of the many children of Jamaican singer Denroy Morgan. In 1994, Peter, whose voice was widely described among the most iconic of his generation, founded the reggae ensemble Morgan Heritage alongside four of his siblings, securing a deal with MCA and releasing their debut album Miracles that same year. Subsequently, the family made a move back to Jamaica.
In the following years, Una Morgan and Nakhamyah ‘Lukes’ Morgan departed from the group, leaving Peter, Roy ‘Gramps’ Morgan and Memmalatel ‘Mr Mojo’ Morgan to steer the successful collective. Their 2015 album Strictly Roots garnered a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016, while their subsequent release Avrakedabra received a Grammy nomination in 2018.
Their latest Africa-facing album The Homeland, released in April 2023, features collaborations with many of the continent’s top names, including Youssou N’Dour, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, Made Kuti, Otile Brown and Eddy Kenzo, among others.
Speaking to Music In Africa last year about the LP, Morgan Heritage’s Mr Mojo said the project’s aim was to incorporate the sounds that were defining African music. “That potpourri is what the blueprint is for the album: to bring in people from different countries across the continent and link them with featured artists from Jamaica,” he said.
