Dr Olugander, a Helsinki-based veteran Gambian reggae dancehall artist has released a new seven-track afrobeat album titled Bulma Bai.

Dr Olugander insists his new album is strictly African

The album, produced by Gander Productions is available on compact disc and can be found on all online digital platforms. The project is accompanied by a video directed by Abdou Waggeh/Waxmedia called ‘Bulma Bai’.

Dr Olugander started his musical career at a young age, inspired by his late grandfather Oupa Kambai Joku who was a great cultural musician in his hay-days.

The 2008 winner of the Best Reggae Song in Gambia derived his title from fans who regard him as a musical doctor. Olu means godfather while the ‘gander’ part of his name came as a result of his love for the male goose, the “gander”, which is his favourite pet. “Abukpapa” is a name gotten from his Man-Jah-Go clan which means ‘father’s child’.

Dr Olugander explains that the album is an afro-cultural and afrobeat dancehall album, “strictly African, meaning it is not reggae.” The video was premiered on the internet one week before the release of the album.

The veteran reggae/dancehall singer in a cross-over move added that the messages in the album are geared towards preservation of “our cultural heritage and upliftment, love, social life, and songs based on real experiences of the musician’s and life struggles”.

“I have been inspired by afro-fusion music forever,  anyone who knows Dr Olugander knows that, so due to the high demand from my fans all over to revive my afro-type pattern and music I decided to give strength by revitalizing culture this time because it has its own market too.” He added, “I want to please my fans in the Gambia,  Senegal,  Guinea Bissau,  Guinea, Portugal,  Spain and France,” he said.

His last album titled Friends on Journey, released in 2018 featured a selection of artists from Jamaica, Gambia and Trinidad & Tobago including Macka B, Siddy Ranks, Teflon, and Ele Trunk, the controversial son of popular reggae-dancehall act Elephant Man.
