Ballantine’s has announced the recipients of its 2023 True Music Fund, which is intended for artists, creative promoters and independent programmers.
The 10 recipients will each receive £10 000 ($12 800), which is part of Ballantine’s longstanding commitment to push underground scenes forward and to support artists, fans, crews and communities around the world.
“This £100,000 fund has been set up to support organisations actively working to achieve these core ideals globally,” Ballantine’s said. “In a world still unpicking the dominance of colonial conditioning, the focus here is on supporting emerging local music-focused organisations and collectives, to help elevate their essential work as they strive for equality in music.”
This year, the recipients include several African outfits spearheading progressive and inclusive businesses that are helping to provide a solid foundation for their local communities. In a statement, female-led South Africa-based organisation Africa Rising Music Conference (ARMC) said it was thrilled to be beneficiaries of Ballantine’s True Music Fund.
“This prestigious fund, established by Ballantine’s, supports diverse artists and inclusive music experiences worldwide,” ARMC said. “With this generous support, we’ve facilitated a cultural exchange and mobility program for musicians and music professionals from Zambia, fostering unity and shared passion across borders.
“We stand alongside nine other global recipients, each committed to enriching their local music scenes and promoting diversity and inclusivity. From Nigeria’s Femme Africa to Brazil’s Feminine Hi-Fi, these collectives are making a significant impact in the music industry. We’re excited for the journey ahead and can’t wait to share more updates on our initiatives.”
