Tanzanian singer and songwriter Phina has been named as the latest artist to join Apple Music’s Up Next programme for East Africa, a global artist development initiative that highlights emerging talent from around the world.

Phina.

Phina, whose real name is Sarah Michael Kitinga, said the recognition motivates her to continue creating music and reaching wider audiences.

The artist’s musical journey began at an early age, performing in church choirs before gaining national attention after winning Bongo Star Search in 2018. Since then, she has established herself as one of Tanzania’s leading voices in Bongo Flava and Afro-fusion music.

Her breakthrough single ‘Upo Nyonyo’ introduced a distinctive blend of Bongo Flava, Afrobeat and R&B, complemented by her soulful vocals and energetic delivery. The song’s success was followed by other popular releases such as ‘Rara’ and ‘Manu’, which have become staples in Tanzanian contemporary music.

Phina’s achievements include winning Best Female Performer and Best East Africa Collaboration at the Tanzanian Music Awards. She has also collaborated with regional artists including Jux, Otile Brown, Jay Melody, Wendy Shay, Savara and Ruby. Internationally, she was nominated for Best New MVP at the 2023 Soundcity MVP Awards, alongside artists such as Ayra Starr, Ruger and Black Sherif.

As part of the Up Next feature, Phina will appear on Apple Music’s Up Next playlist, which showcases new and developing artists selected by Apple Music editors globally. The playlist is not restricted by genre and aims to introduce fresh talent to broader audiences.

The programme has previously featured international stars such as Billie Eilish, Burna Boy, H.E.R., Rema, Tems, and Megan Thee Stallion, among others, many of whom went on to achieve global recognition.
