South African Afro-house DJ and producer Prince Kaybee will release a remix of Time, a track by San Francisco-based alternative R&B duo Karmacoda, on 13 February.
The remix is set for release via Sola Musa Music. It marks Prince Kaybee’s first major project of 2026, adding an Afro House interpretation to a song originally featured on Karmacoda’s 2022 album Lessons in Time. The original track explores themes of regret and introspection and features subdued, processed vocals layered over piano chords, rhythm elements and a melodic structure.
Prince Kaybee, a platinum-selling artist and television personality, rose to prominence after winning South African DJ search competitions in 2015. He has since received multiple South African Music Awards, including Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album and Album of the Year. His accolades also include a Best Dance Album award at the Metro FM Music Awards and repeated Song of the Year honours at the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.
International recognition followed with a Best Collaboration award at Nigeria’s Soundcity MVP Awards Festival for Gugulethu, as well as nominations and wins at the African Muzik Magazine Awards. His catalogue includes platinum-certified singles such as Club Controller, Banomoya and Uwrongo, the latter of which was named among TIME magazine’s 10 Best Songs of 2020. He has also collaborated with artists including Lady Zamar, Busiswa, TNS, Shimza, Black Motion and Ami Faku.
Karmacoda is a long-running duo whose work spans electronica, trip-hop, R&B, ballads and dream pop. The group comprises vocalists and producers Brett Crockett and Jessica Ford, alongside bassist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Matsuno. Over two decades, their music has received support from international publications and platforms, including Electronic Groove, Dancing Astronaut, YourEDM, CLASH Magazine and NPR Music, with additional airplay on RTÉ 2XM.
Prince Kaybee’s remix introduces a steady Afro House rhythm while retaining the emotional core of the original composition. The production centres on layered percussion and piano motifs, aligning the track with contemporary Afro House styles associated with artists such as Sun-El Musician, Zakes Bantwini and Da Capo.
Speaking about his approach to the remix, Prince Kaybee said: “When I make music I see colour, so the vocals on the original remind me of blue, which I associate with a mild cold or a subtle fresh breeze. Before I did the remix, I needed to find its colour – that’s how it started.”
The remix of Time expands the reach of the original recording while situating it within the evolving landscape of African electronic and dance music.
