Ghanaian dancehall and Afro-pop artist Stonebwoy today released the attendant video to his single ‘Gidigba’, which was released weeks ago and available for streaming and download on all digital platforms.
‘Gidigba’ means stand firm in Yoruba, and is Stonebwoy’s second single since joining Def Jam Africa in May. It also heralds the artist’s fifth album.
The clip, co-directed by Stonebwoy, explores the intricacies of high art while charging audiences to strive beyond their disenfranchised circumstances. It also seeks to position the artist as a beacon of empowerment for generations to come.
Composed shortly after the completion of a play, the project also finds the musician striking a delicate balance between theatre and fashion. ‘Gidigba’ follows the tale of a young boy who’s endured an excruciating fall from grace when his parents are murdered, and he is thrown headfirst into the slums, bargaining with death in an unending struggle to escape troubles.
The brave-hearted young boy rallies his community members to take a stand and overthrow the gangsters who have been reigning terror on their lives for far too long. The fable serves as an extended metaphor premised on the touchstone of hope, overcoming challenges, and conquering adversities.
Stonebwoy said that the story is inspired by the hardships of life and how we have to constantly stand firm and strong because tomorrow the situation can change, therefore I wrote this story to touch on the very emotional core of the song and what it represents.”
A BET award-winning artist behind an extensive catalogue spanning multiple genres, Stonebwoy is also a philanthropist and creative entrepreneur.
On 23 December, at the Grand Arena in Accra International Conference Centre, Stonebwoy will be headlining the sixth edition of his annual BHIM Nation Concert, which unites African and Caribbean culture through music and art.
