Four-man South African kwaito/house group Uhuru will thrill music lovers at the 12th Ugandan edition of Blankets & Wine, to be held at the Uganda Museum in Kampala on Sunday 27 March.

South African group Uhuru will headline Blankets & Wine in Kampala, Uganda this weekend.

Uhuru shot into the limelight in 2013 after featuring on Mafikizolo‘s hit single ‘Khona’. Later that year they released the chart-topping ‘Y-tjukutja’, which went on to win several awards. The song is a South African version of Angolan artist Yuri Da Cunha’s ‘Atchu Tchutcha’.

Joining them at the upcoming Blankets & Wine concert will be homegrown Ugandan talent in the form of Sandra Suubi, Sitenda Kisakye and reggae veteran Maddox Ssematimba.

Maddox is widely renowned for his songs of love, unity, social justice, peace and everyday life. His energetic performance will be a welcome addition for the revelers expected to flock to the Uganda Museum this weekend.

Passionate singer-songwriter Sitenda describes her sound as deep, meaningful soul music infused with modern Afro-jazz, hip-hop and RnB elements. She represented Uganda at the East African talent search Tusker Project Fame in 2013 and the following year released the single ‘Ela’.

Sandra Suubi shot to fame in early 2015 after participating in the Airtel Music Trace Star competition, representing Uganda at the finals in Kenya. A powerful vocalist, Sandra’s experimentation with various genres has resulted in beautiful songs such as ‘African Woman’, ‘Amazing Love’ and ‘Togwamu Suubi’.

Blankets & Wine is a popular series of music events that was started in Kenya in 2008 by Muthoni DQ (read our two-part interview with her here and here). It has since spread all over the East African region.

Tickets for Sunday’s event cost 100 000 Ugandan Shillings (US$30) and are available from various locations – for more details visit the Blankets & Wine Kampala Facebook page.
