The organisers of the annual Felabration festival, which takes place in Lagos, Nigeria, have extended the deadline for the event's art contest to 15 September.

Fela Kuti.

According to a statement issued last week, all competition entries will be exhibited at Kalakuta Museum where a group of judges will determine the top three works of art, which will be unveiled on the opening day of Felabration on 14 October.

The first day of the festival will also feature the Fela Debates under the theme, Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense

Lemi Ghariokwu, who illustrated many of Fela’s album sleeves, will be the guest of honour when the winner of the art competition is unveiled. The winner is set to go home with 100 000 naira ($280) while the first and second runners-up will receive N75 000 and N50 000 respectively.

This year’s Felabration is also running the Afrobics Dance Competition, which recently opened its application process. The deadline is 31 August.

The competition begins with an audition on a yet to be announced date, while the finals will take place on 9 October at Freedom Park in Lagos. The same day will also see the Felabration School Debate, which aims to sensitise teenagers about the ideals of Africanism.

The teenagers will be pitted against each other in a battle of the wits around given topics, with debaters from private and public schools using their oratorical and rhetorical skills to come out tops. The theme for discourse this year is Should Persons Above 70 Years of Age Be Allowed to Vie for Political Office?

Felabration will also host a number of big-name local and international artists. The artists will be announced in due course, the organisers said.
