American singer-songwriter R. Kelly has just released his 13th album. Titled The Buffet, the album sees the R&B man exploring diverse sounds and featuring a number of artists. Nigerian pop star Wizkid has a verse on ‘I Just Want to Thank You’ on the album’s deluxe version.
The collaboration caps a year that has brought singer Wizkid an increased visibility on the international music scene. Prior to the R. Kelly feature, his song ‘Ojuelegba’ was remixed by American rapper Drake and the UK-born emcee Skepta. Also the same song was reviewed favourably by US publication Pitchfork.
Advance notice of the Kelly collaboration went out weeks ago, with the release of the tracklist for The Buffet. But a problematic feature with singer 2face few years ago may have caused some scepticism, which has been put to rest upon the release of The Buffet.
Reviews of The Buffet have been mixed, with critics noting that the album marks a return to the sex-themed work that is the emblem of several albums by the American. Writing in the New York Times, Ben Ratliff called his major subject “sex – sex as poetry, sex as a public disturbance, sex as a marching-band performance.”
Ratliff continues: “In the song “Marching Band,” there’s the album’s most memorable simile: tuba-playing as fellatio. If you suspect that there will be a sex-as-buffet metaphor at some point, you will be right.”
Kelly’s collaborator Wizkid has released the video to a new single ‘Baba Nla’. His song ‘Ojuelegba’ was recently named the 12th best song in 2015 by US magazine Fader.
