Digging up rare vinyl grooves from basements in downtown Jozi, DJ Okapi brings a forgotten era of South African pop music back to life - the synth-fuelled disco-funk known as bubblegum that was the soundtrack to the turbulent 1980s. DJ Okapi pays tribute to the era's forgotten heroes and joins the dots to their contemporaries in other parts of Africa and its diaspora. In a scene dominated by house music and laptop DJs, Okapi's timeless, inimitable and relentlessly funky vinyl selection comes as a breath of fresh air.
