If any critics think that house music lacks heart, Lulo Cafe is here to prove you wrong! The DJ injects a deep soul influence, incorporating funk, R&B and jazz influences, into his slick, hugely catchy beats.
The result is enhanced by some imaginative collaborations, among them Brazil-based Mozambican singer Lenna Bahule, who lends some bossa nova-style scatting to ‘I’mpatano’, a collab with Black Motion. Another highlight is ‘Dlalel’apha Kum’ featuring Bongeziwe Mabandla, who gives Vusi Mahlasela a run for his money with his powerful falsetto.
The 12-track disc also features the like of Kabomo and Donald, as well as female talent like Moneoa, Nizreen and selina campbell from the UK on the R&B-infused single ‘Crazy’. Lulo brings out the best in all of them with his solid midtempo grooves that suit any environment, day or night.
Lulo has been on the up and up for the past few years, and with Soul Africa looks set to take his place at the top of the SA house scene. Early proof of this is that the album recently gained four nominations at the Metro FM awards – including Best Dance Album, Best Male Artist and Song of the Year of ‘Whistling to Bed’ featuring Black Motion and Nape Leon. This is Mzansi house at its best!
