Kenyan gospel singer Daddy Owen has been named ambassador of a local health scheme called National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Kenyan gospel singer Daddy Owen.

News of the appointment was made public by the singer who shared the information on his Facebook page last week.

‘’Thanking God for such an opportunity,’’ Daddy Owen said. “As the new NHIF brand ambassador, I kick-off the church tour together with NHIF this coming Sunday at CITAM Buruburu. Come one come all and register to get your NHIF cover.’’

In his new role, Owen is expected to tour churches around the country in an effort to encourage young people to get health cover with NHIF, a Ministry of Health parasratal which provides medical insurance to its members.

Speaking to Music In Africa, Owen said: ‘’I am excited to be part of the recruitment process because under the Kenyan constitution, health is a right and everyone needs to access all the available information. For the next one year, I will also be taking part in NHIF’s other marketing and brand campaigns.’’

Owen said women and the youth are vulnerable and should be prioritised when it comes to health matters. His appointment comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta directive last year directed that the Ministries of Education and Health should enroll three million secondary school students into the NHIF programme.

Last week, the Ministry of Education announced that secondary school students across the country will start to benefit from the Ksh4 billion (USD 39 860 000) medical cover.

The singer has since released a theme song aimed at creating and spreading awareness of the NHIF programme.
