Ghanaian singer Becca has been named an ambassador of the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition.
She is joined by the actress Jackie Appiah as well as fellow music acts Kidi, Kuami Eugene and Kwasi Arthur.
They were introduced at a recent event at the British Council premises in Accra, Ghana, which took place after the Duchess of Cornwall and Ghana’s First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo launched the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition at Ghana International School during the Royal Visit.
“Today we are continuing the tradition of historic events and we are launching something that has never been done before,” said John Apea of the Royal Commonwealth Society. “This is the first time we are launching the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) goodwill ambassadors for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.”
This year’s topics, according to a statement by the RCS, “call upon young people to consider how they can work to use cultural, technological and environmental connections for positive change across the Commonwealth. It asks young people to consider the potential of the Commonwealth in strengthening the vast and varied links between citizens.”
As ambassadors, Becca and company are required to promote literacy across the country and encourage young people to see value in education. “Illiteracy is unacceptable and we need to do something about it,” said Eric Kutortse, chair of the advisory board of the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition in Ghana.
Speaking about the selection, Apea said, “Jackie Appiah, Becca, Kwasi Arthur, Kidi and Kuami Eugene are not only popular and sensational in their chosen fields they have also shown great sense of professionalism thus far.”
The competition is ongoing and ends in June next year. In that time, the ambassadors will visit many schools in Ghana talking about the importance of reading and writing.
“I am glad to be a part of this,” said Kwesi Arthur. “I wasn’t able to further my education to the highest level. But I am glad they chose me to be a part of this. I am looking forward to inspiring the youth and the young boys to be involved in this competition.”
