SA: Watch Goethe-Institut Library Jams featuring Kujenga

The project is a partnership between the Goethe-Institut and Power 98.7 FM, and seeks to create performing and income-generating opportunities for artists in a safe environment while simultaneously producing fresh digital content. The initiative began during the COVID-19 lockdown in South Africa. Other artists who have benefited from this initiative include Zoë Modiga,  Sha Sha, Msaki, Langa Mavuso and hip hop collective The Charles Géne Suite.

“The Goethe Library Jams are inspired by the tiny desk concerts we are all familiar with – with a special twist,” Goethe-Institut regional head of cultural programmes Dr Asma Diakité said. “Libraries as a place of encounters, as an archive of our history forms the backdrop of those captivating concerts.

“The new Library Jams episodes are special in many ways. They are carefully curated masterpieces, weaving together a tapestry of musical brilliance and artistic diversity. They are enthralling journeys through various genres of art, that speaks to the richness of South African music.”

Kujenga is a Swahili word which means to build. The name symbolises the band’s belief in their calling as musicians: to build and create meaningful experiences with every single listener, through their art. The band features Owethu Ndwandwe (lead vocals and keys), twin brother Zwide Ndwandwe (bass), Thane Smith (electric guitar), Skhumbuzo Qamata (drums), Bonga Mosola (trumpet), Matthew Rightford (tenor sax) and Tamzyn Freeks (trombone). Their music is a combination of different genres which come from the African diaspora, with black improvisational music being the central point of the band’s sound. Kujenga released its debut album Nationality in 2019. The project explores various themes including Africanism, spirituality and political expression.
