Spotify releases documentary on 3 Step pioneer Thakzin

Thakzin was named Spotify’s RADAR Africa artist in June, joining a roster of emerging musicians supported by the streaming platform’s artist development initiative.

Born in Johannesburg’s Ivory Park in the early 1990s, Thakzin has described his music as deeply influenced by his surroundings, including street sounds and the drumming of a neighbouring sangoma (traditional healer). He has previously said that for him “music is not just sound – it’s spiritual.”

The documentary traces his journey from these early influences to the creation of 3 Step, while offering insight into his personal life and creative process. It features contributions from his sister and road manager Nhlanhla “Smith” Mathebula, artist manager Smanga Memela, creative director Phil Darimont, and his father, December Mathebula.

Spotify said the film underscores the growing global recognition of African innovation in music. Phiona Okumu, head of music at Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa, noted that Thakzin’s work exemplifies the power of African storytelling through sound.

The documentary coincides with the upcoming release of Thakzin’s debut album, Gods Window Pt. 1, scheduled for 26 September 2025.

Participation at ACCES 2025

Thakzin will also feature at the ACCES 2025 music conference in Tshwane, South Africa, where he will appear both as a speaker and performer. On 31 October, he is scheduled to take part in a panel discussion examining the evolution of African electronic music, exploring how sub-genres such as 3 Step are shaping the continent’s creative identity and influencing global sounds.

In addition, Thakzin will perform at the ACCES Showcase Festival at 012 Central in Pretoria’s CBD, joining a line-up of artists representing diverse African genres. His showcase is expected to highlight the rhythmic innovation and spiritual influences behind 3 Step, bringing his studio creations to a live audience.

His participation forms part of ACCES 2025’s wider focus on new African sounds and their export potential, underscoring the role of innovators like Thakzin in driving the continent’s contemporary music movement onto the world stage.
