YouTube Music has begun testing an experimental AI-powered music host designed to enhance users’ listening experiences with commentary, trivia, and background stories between tracks.
The feature, currently available only to select YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States, is being introduced through the company’s YouTube Labs programme. It aims to create a radio-style listening experience by offering short interludes similar to traditional DJs, providing insights about songs, artists, and genres. According to YouTube, it is intended to “deepen your listening experience by sharing relevant stories, fan trivia, and fun commentary about your favourite music.”
Subscribers who have access to the trial can activate the feature using a new ‘sparkle’ button next to the usual thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons on the app. Once enabled, the AI host delivers commentary throughout the session. Users can also choose to pause the feature temporarily for one hour or a full day.
Unlike Spotify’s AI DJ, which launched in 2023 and generates personalised playlists based on listening history, YouTube’s version does not curate or assemble tracks. Instead, it adds contextual information to existing playlists, mixes, and radio streams.
Spotify’s AI DJ uses personal data to offer a tailored, radio-like experience and supports limited voice interactions in English and Spanish, allowing users to request specific moods or genres.
YouTube has emphasised that the new feature remains in the testing phase. A disclaimer presented to users states that “AI commentary can contain mistakes.” Broader rollout will depend on user feedback from the initial trial group.
