Nigerian-German musician Abiodun recently released his single 'Omo Ènìyàn (Razoof Mix)', an updated version of the original song from his 2018 album Break Free, a body of work from a traveller with cosmopolitan consciousness and a universal message.

Abiodun.

The artist is a veteran in the music industry, active under the moniker Don Abi and collaborating with artists such as Gentleman, Xavier Naidoo, Patrice, Gregory Isaacs, Keziah Jones, Bantu and Maceo Parker since the mid-1990s. He gained fame in Germany as a member of the Afro-German anti-racism collective Brothers Keepers, which sold more than 22 000 copies of the single ‘Adriano, the Final Warning’.

The new track, which features Òrànmíyàn like the original, puts an already striking song in a steadier context and groove, utilising its original elements, with electro-dub producer Razoof getting the remix credit.

Omo Ènìyàn, meaning ‘human being’, is unique and meditative, vibrating with a steady unorthodox groove. Making enchanting use of call and response interplay, Abiodun and Òrànmíyàn deliver an outstanding vocal performance. The two contrasting voices create a spiritual atmosphere, transporting the listener to a meditative state and evoking longing for communion.

Influenced by the cultural roots of the Yoruba tradition and a touch of Fuji, the track is centred on a strong and repetitive bassline and is supported by bata drum rhythms and harmonies.

In 2005 Abiodun played a key role on BANTU’s album Fuji Satisfaction, which won critical acclaim and the Kora Awards for Best Group West Africa and Best Group Africa.

Abiodun is supported by his four-piece band, The Ajazcorock, consisting of experienced jazz and pop musicians. On the album and at concerts, their cohesion makes for a soothing experience.
