Singer Adepa won MTN Hitmaker Season 9 in Accra, Ghana, at the weekend. She beat fellow finalists Gabi Nova, Achiaa and Kobby Tuesday to win a recording deal worth GH₵ 120 000 (about $20 000). She takes over from rapper Lasmid, who won the music reality show last year, and dedicated her victory to “everyone who believed in my dream.”
First runner-up Kobby Tuesday took home about $3 500 in prize money, whereas the second runner-up, Gabi Nova, and third runner-up, Achiaa, took home $2 500 and $1 700 respectively.
Organised by MTN Ghana, the competition provides a platform for undiscovered but gifted Ghanaian musicians across various genres. Previous winners of MTN Hitmaker include KiDi, Kurl Songx, Freda Rhymz, OV and Lasmid. This year, the contest ran under the theme, Unlock Your Flow.
“Since MTN conceived the idea to identify, nurture and economically empower talented young Ghanaians who desire a career in the music industry, we have been amazed by the pool of talent that Ghana has and we are encouraged by the positive impact MTN Hitmaker has made in the industry and on the lives on many,” MTN Ghana chief marketing officer Noel Kojo-Ganson said.
“As a brand that serves as an enabler of endless opportunities, there’s more to be done to change the lives of many more young music talents.”
Throughout the competition, contestants were paired with respected Ghanaian producers DJ Breezy, M.O.G Beatz and Mix Masta Garzy, who offered training and mentorship. Singer Eazzy and producers Kaywa and Richie Mensah served as judges for the competition. Veteran rapper Okyeame Kwame was the guest judge for the finale.
The finale was presented by broadcasters Erskine Whyte and Sika Osei and saw performances from KiDi, Mr Drew, Lasmid and Kofi Pages.
