Ghanaian band SuperJazzClub have shared their new single ‘OFF’, available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The track, produced by two of the collective’s members, Øbed and Ansah Live, with additional production from DUKE, represents the unique sound crafted by the group over their five-year journey.
The song starts with an R&B-style reflection on a failed romance, with Seyyoh, the group’s only female member, setting the tone. As the track progresses, it transitions into a more lively rhythm, with Tano Jackson embracing the potential of rekindling a lingering sexual tension through a distinct conversational rap style.
Sonically, the record also draws inspiration from ’90s hip hop and UK garage, enriched with jazz and contemporary Afrobeats.
“The song is about two ex-partners who ran into each other again,” the band says. “One party is trying to make the other entertain the idea of them getting back together but probably just for one night. The idea for this track came about after returning home from our European tour last year. Without even listening to the song, the title gives the mood of the song away. This was a very conscious decision to get the listener to go bananas when the beat dropped. It’s perfect for the clubs but also for hanging with friends in the living room.”
‘OFF’ is SuperJazzClub’s first release for the year, marking their return since ‘AMINA’ and concluding their ACT EP series. Last year’s tracks ‘Too Early,’ ‘Paradise’ and ‘MAD’ were well-received, with ‘MAD’ becoming their top-performing single on streaming platforms.
In 2023, SuperJazzClub gained traction as a live act, headlining shows and performing at festivals across Europe, including The Great Escape Festival (UK), CORE Festival (Belgium), Musique Métisses (France) and We Love Green Festival (France). They also participated in Ghanaian hotel chain Soho House’s Soho Rising concert series and are set to perform at London’s Cross the Tracks festival in May.
On what ‘OFF’ signals for the forthcoming months, SuperJazzClub said: “‘OFF’ is almost an audio recap of all we have learnt and experienced sonically since our last EP in 2020. It’s the best description of where SuperJazzClub is at the moment; a collective of creatives patchworking various influences together to create something that is cohesive and compelling.”
