Apple Music has announced South African musician LUUKHANYO as the latest artist to feature in its Up Next development programme in the country.
“It feels surreal,” he said. “To be recognised for doing what I love, telling stories that come from real life and emotion, it’s validating. I’ve spent years shaping my sound and finding my truth through music, so this moment feels like the universe saying: keep going.”
Raised in Durban, LUUKHANYO has developed a style that blends soul, R&B, hip hop and alternative pop. His work is characterised by introspective lyrics and a smooth vocal delivery that balances emotion and rhythm.
His most recent project, Season One, reflects a shift in his artistic direction. The release adopts a cinematic approach and centres on themes of love, identity and self-discovery. It features contributions from K.Keed, Yanga Chief and Marcus Harvey.
“I’ve always wanted my music to feel like a conversation. Honest, vulnerable, but also confident,” he said. “It’s about creating something that connects with people beyond just the sound.”
As part of his selection, LUUKHANYO will appear on Apple Music’s Up Next playlist, which highlights new and emerging artists chosen by the platform’s global editorial team. The playlist spans multiple genres and aims to introduce developing talent to wider audiences.
The global Up Next programme has previously featured artists including 6lack, Daniel Caesar, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, Mr Eazi, Stefflon Don, Bad Bunny, Juice WRLD, Summer Walker, Burna Boy, Rema, BENEE, Holly Humberstone, Arlo Parks, Tate McRae and Tems.
