After a two-year absence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ugandan hip hop fraternity was finally able to congregate again for the country's top event as MTN Uganda Hip Hop Awards returned this past Saturday.
Sponsored by the telecom giant, the awards recognise and celebrate individuals and groups who have elevated the art form, and the industry in general, over the past year.
As part of the initiative to unearth new talent, the organisers introduced a new live segment, the MTN Pulse Cypher Challenge where five contestants battled for freestyling supremacy, with the winner taking home Ush2 million (about $530) while those coming second and third walked away with $399 and $266, respectively.
Allan Wathika, aka Triggah, was named the winner of the challenge with Ibrahim Balunywa, alias Ebrahim Soul’o, and Anena Missy Ochola, alias King Missy, coming first and second runner-up respectively. MTN also offered a consolation prize of $172 to the other two contestants each as well as 20GB data bundles to all the top five contestants. Additionally, they were offered an opportunity to work together on a collaboration project for free by Swangz Avenue, a leading production powerhouse in Uganda.
