Nigeria's capital city Abuja will host an event for music composers on 6 September at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama.
The event, which is tagged Composers in Conference, is a platform for up and coming composers to meet with themselves and engage established collegues. A statement released ahead of the conference says, attendees will “inspire each other, exchange ideas and develop relationships with players in different areas of contemporary and classical music in Nigeria and across Africa.”
The event will also consist of networking sessions and discussions from practising composers. Among those billed to attend are: Precious Omuku (composer, voice lecturer and renowned operatic tenor), Sir Jude Nnam (one of Africa’s prolific composers), Kodichukwu Okonkwo (a composer of choral music and Anglican chants), Israel Uchenna Echie (author of Gregorian Chant Made Easy).
The event will see the performance of work by African composers. And composers and arrangers of solo, choral and instrumental music will have a unique opportunity to discuss their work with experienced composers. To that end, aspiring composers are asked to bring a sample of their work, whether “finished or partly finished.”
Composers in Conference will be moderated by Edewede Oriwoh, a female African composer of different styles of music including choral classical liturgical music. Entry to the event is free.
