Opoku Mensah to play Accra concert

The concert comes as a celebration of his recent achievements on the international stage which include winning the twin honours of Best African Music Composer and Best African Pianist awards at the Dubai Festival held in 2015.

This celebration of his success follows a recent successful concert at Accra’s +233 Jazz Bar on 5 May. By playing both concerts after his Dubai win in Accra, he positions himself as a distinctly African musician. “Music is a mark of identity,” he says. “I value African music and my choice for African music is to express my pride to be an African.”

In 2014, Mensah released his Spirit of Africa album, consisting seven tracks, in conjunction with his Nananom Band. The album was a mix of sounds—afrobeat, highlife, soul and traditional rhythms. Spirit of Africa was the outcome of the myriad of musical elements encountered by the artist.

Alongside his band, Mensah performed at the Africa Rhythms Festival of Music, which held in Lome, Togo. Accra, however, remains his ground, having played in Ghana’s capital several time at spots including Republic Bar, Alliance Française Accra, Burger, Relish and +233 Jazz Bar and Grill.
