SA artists to stage big concert for Brown Dash

Dubbed the Annual Brown Dash Tribute Concert, the event will be headlined by Brown Dash‘s former close friends Mandoza, Mapaputsi, Brickz and Zola 7.

DJ Bongz, Gigi Lamayne, MS Jones, Latoya Makhene and many other popular  local acts are also expected to perform at the concert which could attract up to 40 000 people.

The concert is an initiative of the Mahlomola Kekana Foundation (MKF). It was launched on 9 May this year, the same day Brown Dash died four years ago.  

“The fundamental aim of this tribute concert is to continue the legacy that Mpamile (Brown Dash) had started and to enable those he has left behind to enjoy his riches,” said head of the foundation, Mahlomola Kekana.

The concert will be staged annually.

Kwaito star Brickz recently told local newspaper Sowetan LIVE that the initiative would go a long way in supporting Brown Dash’s family.

“When Dash died, he was a father and a breadwinner. Life for the family has not been the same since his death. The proceeds of the concert will assist his three kids and family,” said Brickz.

The initiative is supported by the Department Of Community Development and Durban-based recording stable Mabala Noise Entertainment. 

It is understood that the concert also forms part of the Arts Alive International Festival, which takes place at various venues around Johannesburg from 1 to 25 September.

Brown Dash, real name Simphiwe Mpamile, was one of the best kwaito artists to emerge out of South Africa.  Born and bred in Soweto, he started off as a backing vocalist and dancer for Mapaputsi.  He was later spotted by TS Records boss TK Nciza who signed him to his stable. Throughout his career Dash released numerous hits and worked with almost all the big names on the kwaito scene.
