French collective management organisation (CMO) SACEM has launched a new service for composers, authors and songwriters called Musicstart, which allows users to generate proof of ownership of works.

SACEM CEO Cécile Rap-Veber.

The tool uses blockchain technology to convert files, which are populated with data, into a certificate that is linked to a forgery-proof fingerprint. The service offers two price plans including €4 a file for once-off protection and a €5 monthly subscription for unlimited usage of the feature.

Musicstart will work through SACEM’s URights digital service, which allows users to generate proof of anteriority of a work using blockchain technology, the CMO said.

“Users provide the main information about their creation, transmit the associated file (lyrics, score, music, etc.) and receive a certificate of anteriority linked to the fingerprint in the blockchain, which can be used in the event of a legal dispute.”

SACEM says the service can be used by users beyond its members or established songwriters, including novices, experts, beatmakers or bedroom producers.

SACEM CEO Cécile Rap-Veber said: “Today, as new challenges arise with the emergence of uses such as NFTs and the metaverse, and as the challenges related to transparency and the traceability of works persist, SACEM is providing this new answer to the essential question of the protection of works, especially for creators who are starting their careers.”

URights CEO, director of development, phono and digital Julien Dumon said: “The launch of Musicstart marks a turning point for SACEM and is a first step in the development of its URights subsidiary.

“Our ambition is to make this service accessible to as many people as possible, both in France and abroad, in particular through partnerships with key players in the music industry.”
