South African artist Samthing Soweto is set to make a long-awaited return with a full-length studio album titled Touch Is a Move, Good Morning, set for release on 4 July.

This marks the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s first full body of work since 2020, ending a five-year hiatus that left fans eagerly awaiting new material. Known for his emotive storytelling and genre-defying sound, Samthing Soweto – real name Samkelo Mdolomba – reintroduces himself with both vulnerability and creative evolution.

The album’s title, Touch Is a Move, Good Morning, draws from two deeply personal traditions. “Touch Is a Move” refers to a childhood rule that once you touched a piece in any game, you were obliged to play it – no hesitation, no retreat. Meanwhile, “Good Morning” comes from a ritual Samthing Soweto began in 2023, greeting his audience each day with a simple salutation that became a symbolic gesture of connection and consistency.

The first offering from the new project, a pre-release single titled ‘Deda’, is now available for streaming and download across all major platforms. Co-produced with John Lundun, the track showcases Samthing Soweto’s lyrical delicacy and emotional depth.

Inspired by the Nguni proverb “mabudede ubumnyama buvele ukukhanya”, translated as “let the darkness retreat so that light may come”, ‘Deda’ reflects the internal conflict of loving someone who is drawn to nightlife, while hoping for their safety and return. It is a poetic and poignant piece that fans have already hailed as a signature Samthing Soweto ballad.

‘Deda’ follows the success of ‘Amagents’, a heartfelt song from a father to his daughter that topped the South African charts and achieved double platinum status. Both tracks will appear on the upcoming album, setting the tone for what promises to be a deeply resonant and versatile body of work.

From his early days with a cappella group The Soil, to the chart-topping global hit ‘Akanamali’, and the genre-fusing brilliance of ‘Isiphithiphithi’, Samthing Soweto has consistently evolved while remaining rooted in authentic South African storytelling. Touch Is a Move, Good Morning continues that legacy, blending sensitivity, sonic exploration, and soulful expression.

The album can be pre-added here.
