Three African acts nominated for IPMA awards in USA

Ugandan artist Sarah Musayimuto, Phinda Project from Mozambique and Angola’s M’vula have been nominated at the International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA), which recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry by international artists of Portuguese ancestry.

Denmark-based Musayimuto’s music is a combination of soul, reggae, dancehall, zouk, R&B, blues, jazz and pop. She has been nominated in two different IPMA categories: World Music Performance (for her dancehall single ‘Bad Gyal’), and Pop Performance (for her single ‘As Long’). 

Phinda Project has been nominated in the World Performance category, while M’vula bagged a nomination in the Rock Performance category for their single ‘Mãos Ao Ar’.

Established in 2013, the IPMA awards aim to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry by international artists of Portuguese ancestry. This year’s entries were markedly more diversified than in previous editions. Multiple award categories honour exceptional artists for their abilities to inspire audiences all over the world. Nominees are judged by a panel of music industry experts.

This year’s awards will honour artists in 12 different categories: Music Video of the Year, Instrumental, World Music, Traditional, Fado, Dance, Rap/Hip-Hop, Rock, Pop, New Talent, Song of the Year and People’s Choice. While the nominees for 11 categories were announced on 26 February, the People’s Choice nominees are set be be revealed at a later date.

The IPMA award show will be held on 23 April at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, Massachusetts in the USA.
