It is still Wizkid season. On 27 October, the Nigerian pop star was announced winner of the MOBO Best African Act category.

Wizkid has won the 2016 MOBO Best African Act award

His MOBO win comes after the ‘Ojuelegba’ singer dominated the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards by winning three awards, including Artist of the Year. His triumph at the Johannesburg held ceremony was capped with a lengthy performance.

With his MOBO win Wizkid breaks the three-year hold Ghana’s Fuse ODG had on the category. It is Wizkid’s second win after his 2011 triumph.

The announcement of Wizkid’s latest win was made public at the pre-award ceremony for the forthcoming main event of the MOBO. Wizkid was absent at the event. Over on twitter, the MOBO Awards handle posted a tweet: “Congrats, @wizkidayo! Our Best African Act winner for 2016” alongside a photo of the award-winning artist.

The year has been especially good to Wizkid who despite not having released an album since 2014’s Joy, has been rewarded with coveted collaborations, grand concerts and awards. He is said to also have signed with Sony Music Entertainment with either party yet to confirm the deal and provide details.

The initial list of nominees for the Best African Act category saw Nigeria dominate as Wizkid was included alongside with his compatriots Moelogo, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Olamide and Yemi Alade. Also nominated were Mr Eazi, Mista Silva, Eugy and Kwamz & Flava. That list was then cut to five, with Mr Eazi, Ms Savage, Moelogo, Eugy and the eventual winner making the final selection.

The main ceremony for the MOBOs take place in Glasgow in the UK on 4 November.
