Imaging company Canon this week launched the inaugural Africa Frontiers of Innovation Series.

Mai Youssef.

The multi-sector initiative was first launched in the Middle East in 2016. It brings together industry and sector professionals to facilitate an online platform to promote innovation, share ideas, gain insights and experiences, and create possible solutions to existing challenges.

The series will be broadcast online every month and will explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals, sectors and economies. Speakers will discuss key evolving trends and delve into how different sectors are mitigating COVID-19 challenges. It will be moderated by award-winning Kenyan journalist Victoria Rubadiri, a senior news anchor at Citizen TV and former host of Kenyan talk show Victoria’s Lounge.

“Much like the previous editions of Frontiers of Innovation, the Africa series takes a deep dive into innovative technologies and operational efficiencies across a range of sectors, including music, photography, cinema and printing,” Canon Africa, Middle East and Turkey corporate communications and marketing services director Mai Youssef said.

The first instalment of the series, which aired on 27 January, tackles the subject of post-COVID education. It is titled ‘Developing Digital Skills and Literacy for Students’, and featured Yaba College of Technology’s Dr Pius Egiolamhen, UNICEF representative in Rwanda Julianna Lindsey and the director of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, Prof Charles Ochieng’ Ong’ondo.

Viewers can expect upcoming discussions on the following topics:

  • Innovation in Music: How Digitisation Has Impacted the Industry and Its Challenges in Africa.
  • How Cinema Is Re-Inventing Itself in a COVID-19 World.
  • Content Creation: The Trends, Challenges, and How Consumer Demand Drives Innovation
