The Ghana Music Week festival has kicked off. Organised by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), the festival commenced with coverage on television and other media.

Wiyaala will be performing at the 2016 Ghana Music Week

The Ghana Music Investment Forum, which began the festival proper, held on 3 March. The International Music Expo holds on Friday 4 March at Ghana’s National Theatre.

Speaking about this edition of Ghana Music Week, MUSIGA president Bice Osei Kuffour (popularly known as Obour) said the content and schedule of the event is based on industry recommendation. The notion, according to Kuffour, who last year won a second tenure as president, is to establish a festival vibe throughout the week.

Industry workers invited to the festival include, investment consultants, copyright authorities and financial experts—all of whom are attending the Music Investment Forum. The general public is invited as are singers, artist managers and music producers.

Also included in the program is the International Music Expo, which functions as an exchange-based event: Alongside Ghanaian artists with international exposure like Wiyaala, Knii Lante, Dela Boutri and Sherifa Gunu, Kuffour said music and musicians from countries with diplomatic presence locally will be invited to perform for attendees. These countries include the United States, China, India and Belgium.

British Council, Gold Coast Fund Management and the American Embassy are sponsors of the 2016 edition of the festival.
