This survey is conducted by WiBO Culture, a community-based organisation that aims to accelerate the socio-economic potential of cultural and creative products in Kenya.

“Together with you, we plan to innovate a solution for intellectual property management to benefit the community of creatives in Kenya,” the survey reads.

“Your responses will inform a training programme for artists and train paralegals who will oversee the administration and management of intellectual property at the county level in Kenya.”

The intellectual property sector has seen major shifts in recent times, particularly with the development of video and music streaming platforms where infringements are commonplace.

The creative industry represents a new frontier for economic development in Africa and is responsible for contributing significantly to the GDP of a number of developed countries, one of them being Kenya.

A 2007 study conducted jointly by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation WIPO placed Kenya’s creative sector at 85.1 billion Kenyan shillings ($820m), or about 5.3% of the country’s GDP.

In 2018, KECOBO launched its strategic plan for the 2017-22 period where attorney-general Paul Kihara Kariuki noted that his office had begun the process of ensuring that Kenya ratified the international copyright treaties it had signed, as there was an urgent need to protect creatives’ rights and promote their works in the name of sustainable development.
