Red Bull Dance Your Style, the global urban street dance competition, is back in Kenya for its fifth edition.
The competition will tour different regions in the country in search of the best dancers, who will battle each other for the ultimate prize. After its launch in Nairobi on 23 March, the competition will pass through two universities and three cities, including Eldoret, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi for a second time, with the national finals set to be held on 13 July.
Red Bull Dance Your Style’s winner is selected through public voting after dancers’ creativity, freestyle and musical skills are put to the test in front of a live audience. All urban dance styles are welcome, except for breakdancing. A DJ plays unpredictable music to which the dancers must adapt, showcasing their moves and versatility in the hope of impressing the crowd. After each battle, the spectators hold up blue or red placards to choose a winner.
International Red Bull dancer and world champion Stalamuerte from Switzerland, celebrated globally for his signature hip hop dance moves, was in Kenya for the launch of the competition. He met members from Kenya’s dance community and interacted with them through a panel discussion and Q&A session hosted by media personality Azeezah Hashim.
He later led an interactive dance workshop where he was joined by a host of dancers and dance groups. He also tackled the fundamentals of winning a Red Bull Dance Your Style contest, including musicality, vibing with the crowd and how to adapt to music. He also touched on personal branding and how to use social media as a marketing tool.
“My advice to Kenyan dancers is to master confidence and trust their art,” Stalamuerte said. “Keep doing your thing and don’t worry about other people’s opinions. If you are passionate about what you do, that’s all that matters.”
Also in attendance was Kenya’s Red Bull Dance Your Style 2023 Champ Fabius Oduor. “Becoming the reigning champ was a mind-blowing experience and a dream come true that I’d wish for every other Kenyan dancer,” he said. “I am also participating in this year’s competition and I look forward to displaying my growth as a dancer and seeing how the new experience unfolds for me.”
Red Bull Kenya is aiming to upskill local dance communities while exposing them to different levels of dance on a global stage. This year, Red Bull Dance Your Style is taking place in 51 countries . The winner at the national finals will represent Kenya in Mumbai, India, for the world finals on 9 November.
