South African gqom duo Still That Combo has released a single titled ‘Sukuma Sikubone’, which is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms.
The track features contributions from Woza Sjax and Sunshine, blending classic gqom energy with modern production techniques. The song’s title, which loosely translates to “stand up so we can see you,” sets the tone for a song that demands attention and movement from its first beat.
Despite lacking vocals, the track speaks volumes through its intricate composition and infectious rhythm. It represents a return to gqom’s raw, underground roots, while simultaneously pushing sonic boundaries, a balance struck with the help of collaborators Woza Sjax and Sunshine, who add their own flair to the production.
‘Still That Combo’ rose to prominence with their Party Favour EP and have since been instrumental in revitalising gqom, a genre once at the heart of South Africa’s dance music scene. As the genre navigates a path back into mainstream prominence, DJ Perci and Darksilver remain at the forefront of its resurgence.
“‘Sukuma Sikubone’ is not just a track, it’s a bold, unapologetic statement,” the duo said in a statement. “It captures the energy of the streets and the spirit of the genre.”
With summer on the horizon and festivals in full swing, ‘Sukuma Sikubone’ is poised to become a staple in DJ sets across the continent, a timely reminder of gqom’s enduring impact and the track’s role in shaping its future.
