Workshop and performance inspires Mozambican music students

The training was organised by Music Crossroads Mozambique in collaboration with Maputo-based NGO Associação IVERCA (hosts of the annual Mafalala Festival). The Sibusile Xaba Trio was on an ‘Unlearning Mozambique’ tour, sponsored by Concerts SA through its Music Mobility Fund.

A total of 35 people – consisting of 30 Music Crossroads Academy (MCA) students and teachers, as well as five visitors who share a passion for music – were present on the day. The students welcomed the band with a wonderful performance; a beautiful mix of voices and various Mozambican sounds.

In accordance with Music Crossroads Mozambique’s objectives of promoting local talent and cultural values, the organisers were happy to see that the students were inspired and willing to have a cultural exchange with the group as they got to play South African and Mozambican traditional tunes together.

The Sibusile Xaba Trio delivered an extraordinary performance with a focus on using music as a therapy (a sentiment echoed recently by Tanzania’s Mzungu Kichaa). The musicians impressed with their originality and by the way they transmitted understanding, love and inspiration through their songs. They encouraged the students to continue studying at the academy and never give up on the dream. Xaba explained that it is their responsibility as artists to promote culture.  

The workshop brought a new musical perspective and source of motivation to Mozambique’s upcoming musicians. After the workshop, the students had the privilege of interacting with the Xaba and his group, further ensuring a fruitful exchange of musical knowledge and understanding.
